I’ve got to take my hat off to William and add it to his colourful hat stand, I couldn’t have done a better job myself. The before and after pictures of how his man cave was rescued with Feng Shui speak a thousand words. His office and his home transformed beyond recognition.
The Feng Shui task
It’s not easy being a ‘bloke’ living on your own to convince yourself that your space matters enough to make it a priority. What clinched it for him was having to work at home most of the time – and online. He had to do something.William had very practical needs from the Feng Shui session, which will ring bells for many. He lives in a first floor flat with a ground floor entrance.
“Mary, please help me fix my flat so I can concentrate and not get so distracted?”
“I need more space, more clarity and more work to flow in yet every room feels blocked.
“I’ve scooped up papers and books because they didn’t look good on Zoom. Now they’re sitting in piles at the top of the stairs along with all the other stuff that’s accumulated there. It drives me mad every time I pass by but I can’t seem to get it sorted.
“I’m teaching a training course and prefer to stand up to teach. Other times I need to sit down to work at my laptop but my office is already crowded out with the extra equipment I need to be online.”
Exponential improvement in productivity
If you’re someone who believes “I absolutely do not have the time for this” then you absolutely know that your spent clearing, organising and rearranging will have an exponential improvement in your productivity and focus. We’ll benchmark it to just to prove it.
Attending to your environment kills two birds with one stone.
It clears out dead wood to make space for growth while repatterning your psyche for clarity, direction and new opportunities.
Man cave rescued
Over the course of a few weeks, William worked through his prioritised task list. Knowing what to focus on first that will make the biggest difference is half the battle and prevents overwhelm. We stayed in touch throughout to deal with resistance as it arose.
He admits it wasn’t easy. But now, not only have the files disappeared, the kitchen looks like new, and the furniture reshuffled in a way to give the flat a facelift. William’s whole outlook on life has changed too.
“Having got the files out onto the floor it took me several days looking at them before I could decide how to sort them. I’d agreed a deadline with Mary and this definitely helped otherwise I wouldn’t have found my way through. It felt too hard – and I could already see a family pattern of keeping things we no longer needed in a disorganised jumble of stuff.”
“I’m feeling a lot calmer and feelings of negativity have greatly reduced. I can see a way forward in my life and I’m excited about what’s coming my way. The whole process made me realise where I hold myself back by through fear by putting obstacles in my own way.
“One extra payoff… I let go of my last relationship – or the hope of getting it back the way it was. I thought about all the good times we had rather than dwell on what went wrong. Thank you for your help and support with all this.”
Feng Shui tips for you
Here are some of the recommendations which helped William be more productive and alert to new opportunities. Pick any one idea and apply it to your own space to get your life motoring. You don’t have to do them all.
1. With a narrow front door entrance remove coats from the rack and don’t allow shoes to accumulate at the foot of the stairs.
2. Clear the piles of papers from the floor at the top of the stairs to allow flow into the flat.
3. Stack the papers on the lounge floor where you can see them to sift, sort and shed.
4. Unblock the ‘front door’ upstairs by relocating the saxophone station to the lounge.
5. Encourage the energy up the stairs by using a painting with perspective at the top.
6. Blitz work tops, storage and recycling in the kitchen since this room sits in the Wealth corner.
7. Relocate the magnificent money tree to the Wealth corner of the office to increase business.
8. Free up the Relationship corner of the lounge by relocating the TV to a less domineering position.
9. In the Relationship corner instead place a receptive armchair to be open to receive yourself and a relationship.
10. Sell the redundant set of filing drawers blocking the flow on the landing.
11. Display the crazy hat stand on the landing for fun and colour.
12. Reposition the desk in the office so it no longer faces the wall under the eaves.
13. Remove the paperwork from underneath the desk and stuffed down the sides.
14. Sort the contents of the filing cabinet.
15. Remove detritus from all surfaces in the office to create an uncluttered Zoom space.
