Why New Year’s Resolutions seldom last and intuitive vision boards do
With the New Year approaching fast comes the opportunity to participate in a tradition many of us relish. Leaving the old year behind we express our hopes and desires for the year ahead in the form of New Year’s Resolutions (NYRs).
I too enjoy a moment to contemplate the future but I know that writing out NYR’s is not enough. If I allow my left-brain ‘planner’ to take charge and my right-brain intuition to be overlooked, there will be trouble ahead. After a few months my right-brain will vent its silent protest in the form of resistance to the NYRs it never bought into in the first place.
For example, observe how gyms are filled to the brim in January with waiting lists. By the time February arrives numbers have dwindled. Why?
Because the decision to take out a gym membership was taken by the logical half of the brain independently of the creative half which is also required to implement it.
Happy intuition
But don’t expect your intuitive side to give you its version of events in straight sentences.
The intuition has its own language, communicating expansively and circuitously through colour, pattern and metaphor. Give your right-brain a pile of magazines, scissors and glue and it will collage the equivalent of NYRs in the form of an Intuitive Vision Board (IVB).
On this special vision board you’ll see highlighted what will excite, motivate, thrill and surprise you in 2023 on a large piece of mountboard, without having to think too hard about it. In the months ahead, this IVB can provide a source of inspiration to refer back to over and over again.
What appears on your IVB always conveys a higher perspective of what’s best for you. You may not relate to the imagery immediately. However, the probability of your sticking with the implications of it is much higher as Suzanne, a psychotherapist from Essex, explains.
I came to the IVB workshop with no expectations and an open mind. Once all the images had been placed I was filled with tears. Before me was a reflection of parts of myself I had forgotten and thought could not be brought back to life.
Creating an IVB helps to clarify what your real priorities are and focus your attention on what is genuinely important to you in 2023 – not by thinking about it but intuiting it. Don’t be surprised to see activities resurface that your left-brain has already deemed as lesser importance. Your right-brain will prompt for them to be reinstated as Alan, a Technical Scientist describes.
The Intuitive Vision Board lit the blue touch paper and whoosh I sparked into life. Mary’s creative facilitation encouraged my unique qualities to come to the fore so I can look to the future once more with courage and confidence. I would thoroughly recommend this process to anyone who wants to find out more about themselves or be reminded of what really makes them tick.
6 steps to prepare for the New Year ahead
To achieve a more balanced approach to 2023 here’s how you can engage both the left and right-hand sides of the brain.
- Write your NYRs down and hold them in a looser, less end-gaining fashion by calling them intentions. Keep them short and simple. Left-brain.
- Create an Intuitive Vision Board. I made my first board 20 years ago and they’ve evolved since. It happened to be in January but you can make an IVB anytime of year. Right-brain.
- On a yearly planner, divide the year into quarters and allocate your NYRs (now intentions) to the quarter in which you will begin to focus on them. Left-brain.
- Position your IVB prominently and leave it alone. Don’t let afterthoughts cause you to tinker with it – by adding or removing images. Otherwise your left-brain will be over-riding your intuition. Right-brain.
- Review your NYRs occasionally and make a note of what you actually find yourself doing as the year unfolds. Left-brain.
- Contemplate your IVB from time to time. When prompted to act – even if it doesn’t make sense or you can’t see where it’s leading – don’t hesitate. The cumulative effect of these intuitive nudges will lead you exactly where you need to go in a way that defies logic.
Reflecting back a year later I’d be surprised if the IVB doesn’t best describes the trajectory you’ve been on, more so than the NYRs. That’s because it embraces a wider, deeper lifescape of possibilities rather than skimming across the surface of superficial wants and desires.
All the same I like to write my intentions down too. I can still pretend I’m in control of the direction my life is taking when actually I know I’m not. An infinitely-creative source is in charge when I stay out of my own way long enough to allow

About Mary Nondé
Founder of the Intuitive Vision Board. Let me show you how to create your big picture and become your own best authority by relying more on your intuition and less on your logic. I know this works because once upon a time a metaphorical hurricane whipped through my life and flattened the lot. Faced with a crisis of magnitude and blindsided by it, I created a new vision board. It was a lifesaver and provided solutions in a way I’d not previously thought possible.
